Change your company address with ASIC

How Australian companies update their registered and business addresses with ASIC, what to prepare, and the steps to lodge the change online.

What this task actually involves

Changing a company address with ASIC means telling the regulator that the address it holds on the public company record is no longer correct, and replacing it with a new one. It is an administrative update, not a restructure: the company keeps its ACN, its name and its officeholders. What changes is where ASIC and the public will direct correspondence and where the company's record says it can be reached.

ASIC's "Change a company address" page is the starting point, and ASIC states that all Australian companies must tell it about changes to the addresses it lists there. ASIC's separate business name guidance adds the reason this matters in practice: you must keep your address up to date by law so you receive correspondence from ASIC. Annual review documents and invoices are generated against the address on the register, so an out-of-date address tends to surface as missed mail rather than as an immediate penalty.

This guide walks through the preparation and the online lodgement path. It does not state fees, deadlines or processing times, because those are not covered in the material referenced here — check them with ASIC before you rely on them.

Before you start: what to have ready

Most failed or delayed address updates come down to access, not the address itself. Work through this first.

Item Why it matters
Your ACN and company name Identifies the record you are changing
ASIC Connect access, or authority to create it The change is lodged through ASIC's online system
The new address in full Needed exactly as it should appear on the public record
Confirmation of which addresses are moving ASIC's page sets out the addresses companies must report
Contact details for your registered agent or accountant, if you use one Their address may be the one on the register

Two practical points are worth settling before you log in.

First, confirm who is authorised to make the change. ASIC's online services for company officeholders are the route for people acting for the company, and ASIC also lets companies appoint and update an agent. If your accountant or a service provider normally handles ASIC filings, decide up front whether they lodge this one or you do — two people attempting the same update is a common source of confusion.

Second, check whether you are using an agent's address. If the registered address is your accountant's office and they have moved, that is still your company's change to lodge. ASIC's "Update my agent details" service is a separate function from changing the company address itself.

Step-by-step: updating the address through ASIC Connect

1. Read the current ASIC page for your situation

Open ASIC's "Change a company address" page. It sets out which addresses companies must tell ASIC about and the current lodgement options. Because the list of addresses and the available channels can change, treat this page as authoritative over any secondary guide, including this one.

2. Sign in to ASIC's portals

Go to the ASIC website and select the ASIC portals button in the top-right corner to see the available online options. From there you can log in to ASIC Connect, or sign up if you do not yet have access. ASIC Connect is the online system used to manage company and business name details, and it is where address changes are made.

If you are setting up access for the first time, allow time for that before you attempt the address change. ASIC publishes an ASIC Connect user guide (published October 2025) that explains how the portal works.

3. Choose the company and the address change function

Once signed in, select the company you are updating and choose the option to change its address. If the address has previously been notified to ASIC, it may appear in the known addresses list. That prefill is a convenience, not a confirmation — check the entry character by character rather than accepting it on sight, particularly unit numbers and postcodes.

4. Enter the new address and review

Enter the full new address as it should appear on the public record. Review the entry before submitting: the register is public, so what you type is what will be published and what future ASIC correspondence will be sent to.

5. Submit and keep your own record

Lodge the change and save whatever confirmation the portal gives you. Having your own record of when the change was submitted helps if a later annual review or invoice arrives at the old address and you need to show when you notified ASIC.

6. Verify the change has taken effect

After lodging, check the company record shows the new address. ASIC notes that you can download your company annual review statement from ASIC, which includes your annual invoice and payment details — that statement is a useful place to confirm the details ASIC currently holds, including where it will send documents.

If you also hold a business name

A company registration and a business name are separate records, and ASIC publishes separate guidance for each. ASIC's business name guide "How to change your business address" (2025) confirms that you can change a business address through ASIC Connect and that the address must be kept up to date by law. If your business operates under a name registered separately from the company, do not assume the company update covers it — check both records and update each as needed.

Questions to confirm with ASIC before you rely on them

The material referenced here does not answer every question that comes up in practice. Confirm these directly with ASIC or your adviser:

Treat any answer you receive as applying to your circumstances at the time it is given, and re-check if your situation changes.

Your next step

Go to ASIC's "Change a company address" page and confirm which addresses you need to update, then log in to ASIC Connect through the ASIC portals menu and lodge the change. If you do not have portal access yet, set that up first using ASIC's ASIC Connect user guide. Once submitted, download the company's annual review statement to check the details ASIC holds are correct.

If the move is part of a broader review of your business — premises, structure or finance — you can compare options for your circumstances at /match/.
